Hooked’s Fishing Adventures
My first Mexico trip in 1972 – the little guy in front of the Dorado is yours truly.
Rancho Leonero / Hotel Playa Del Sol
Were both exciting trips for me. Killer vacations and the first of many kayaking trips to the East Cape Baja resort area. The wife and I decided to do it for our anniversary. One of my friends, Dennis “Spike”, was doing a Kayak seminar at Rancho Leonero – a 3 night’s trip – and we decided to go with him. We loved it! Then we decided to go to Hotel Playa del Sol for 4 nights, and after that, Palmas de Cortez for a week. Talk about great service, good boats, captains, crews and accommodations!
At Rancho Leonero we had an ocean-view bungalow and would recommend to anybody. At Hotel Playa del Sol we also had an ocean-view room. They even keep the vendors away from guests. There is nothing I hate more than being bugged ever 5 minutes to buy trinkets.
The first night at Rancho Leonero I went out and caught a bunch of triggerfish. The next morning we all decided to go out. I started to troll with a big Rapala and about 2 miles into the paddle I got my first hit. It was a big fish, but in the excitement of being there I forgot to set my drags and the line snapped. There goes that fish. Couple of the other guys caught dorado. Nothing was happening and the wind started to pick up, so since it was going to be a long and hard paddle going against the wind, we headed back. Talking at lunch we decided to go the opposite direction. At about a mile out the tuna were everywhere but nothing would bite. Finally I put on a popper and bam – got a fish on and it pulled me around for about 15 minutes until ???I got in the kayak???. Then it was definitely time for a few drinks.
Went out the next day on a mother ship carrying the kayak and got a 5 lb pargo. The wind picked up so we went back to the hotel.
Fishing at Playa del Sol was on a 28’ foot cruiser so the wife could go out in comfort. This was a totally different story – first time out picked up some bait and went right past Rancho Leonero about 5 mile and the tuna were jumping. It was a blast. Every time I got 1 fish in I was handed a new rod with a fish on it. Man, after pulling on 5 lb to 15 lb tunas for an hour straight I was tired so asked the captain if we could pick up some dorado’s. We picked up 5 and I was done for the day. The next day I asked the captain if we could go after roosterfish – we tried for a few hours with no luck so I am still seeking the illusive roosterfish of my dreams. We trolled for dorado and tuna on the way back into port. What a great day!
Palmas de Cortez
After mentioning to the guys at my work that I wanted to go back down to the East Cape Fishing. I had a couple takers saying they wanted to go with there wives.
They only wanted to go out for 2 days but being hooked on fishing I wanted to do at least 3 days. So I booked our trip to go to the Palmas De Cortez Hotel on the East Cape.
First day was a good day with the group pick up a sailfish couple tuna.
Second day I went out with the wife. I ask the captain about going after some Roosterfish. So we pick up some bait and headed out for where he pick a couple up a few weeks ago. After a few hours of trying we had no luck with them. So the captain told me that sailfish were biting. So since Sailfish was one of the fish I hadn’t caught before I said let do it. I ended up with 2 nice sailfish.
The third day the captains that we were suppose to have was sick. I say hung over since we gave him go tip for getting us on some fish. The captain that we had seemed to me like he didn’t want to get us on fish we did catch a few inside but it was just a bunch of trigger fish and a couple others.
But all and all we had a good time.
Palmas de Cortez
This was really a good trip . . . great fishing, good friends, good food, and good drink . . . what more could a guy ask for?
First day we had to get our own bait. We stopped at the squid grounds and picked up ten 30lb to 40lb squids and headed over to where the dorado were sighted. It was a great bite as we picked up 15 to 20 dorados. Knowing we had this captain on the third day I wanted to ask him if we could go after some tuna. So on the way in I talked to the captain and asked if there were any tuna biting. He told me it would be a long drive because they were over in front of Cabo San Lucas and we would have to leave extra early.
The second day the three other guys did not want to go out so it was only my dad and I. I wanted to try for some Wahoo – we only picked up 1 Wahoo and luckily it was my turn. Then we picked up a few tuna.
Third day out the captain made all the arrangements and we met him at the docks, made the bait, and headed off to the tuna grounds. It was a great bite with non-stop action. As you can guess we were quite tired by the time we got done.
What a great trip!
